Suffering from migraines brought on by degenerative disc disease in my neck, I turned to Pilates 13 years ago hoping to gain tools to control debilitating chronic pain.
And it worked! The migraines subsided as I strengthened my core, learned proper body mechanics, and acquired the
mind-body connection necessary to protect my neck from injury.
Then, after 10 years of devoted professional Pilates training, I thought I knew it all. I was sure I could continue practicing Pilates on my own. In fact, I was so confident, I even purchased a home reformer!
What a terrible decision. Not surprisingly, my workouts became less regular and less disciplined. But, worst of all, over time I lost the all-important mind-body connection that served me so well for so long. The frequent migraines returned along with the chronic neck pain. Back to square one!
Finally, I decided I’d better return to the studio. I signed up for some “refresher” sessions at Bodies by Pilates. I was amazed, in a bad way. It was like I had never done Pilates before. Everything was gone… core strength, body mechanics and the all-important mind-body connection.
Now I am back in the Bodies by Pilates studio to stay, working hard to regain what I had mastered long ago. I still have a long way to go but I am already seeing results.
